Replacing the Hated Arborvitaes with Crossvine

Replacing the Hated Arborvitaes with Crossvine
Arborvitaes failing to screen my view of the parking lot. When I wrote last September that “I hate my arborvitaes” because several of them DIED during a drought (they’re not as drought-tolerant as I wished/hoped), commenter Marianne Willburn wrote, “I hate your arborvitae hedge too. And before some of it died. How about some medium grasses?” I replied that in order to block my view of the parking lot, plants need to be at least 6 feet tall, and that space is very limited. But a better, quicker solution to my screening problem seemed possible, as I wrote in that post: Or how about just constructing a privacy screen and skip the plants altogether? Well, there’s good news on that front because the co-op has recently approved a process for custom-designing and approving screens! Well, turns out that didn’t happen after all, and I won’t be allowed to build a … Read More

Preaching among the choir – GardenRant

Preaching among the choir – GardenRant
Lurie Gardens, Chicago If one more person asks me if I have heard of or read books by Doug Tallamy, I’ll …. Well, I guess I won’t really do anything drastic. I’ll just say “yes,” and perhaps mention that I read his first book when it came out in 2007, and that, over the years, I’ve posted commentary and interviews here, here, here and here. (There were actually more, but a few posts were lost in a server migration, which also explains the broken image links you’ll see.) Other Ranters have also posted—just one example among many. It is to the entomologist’s credit that his message about biodiversity and the necessity of creating habitat has spread so successfully among gardeners. Most of the gardeners I speak to have heard of him and are stocking their beds with all the native plants they can find. There does … Read More

What does “Rural Metro DC Area” even mean?

What does “Rural Metro DC Area” even mean?
The latest in the on-going correspondence between Marianne Willburn and Scott Beuerlein. 6 March 2020 Lovettsville, VA Dear Scott, I am grateful to digital correspondence in that I cannot catch one of the diseases currently incubating in the Petri dish that is your part of Ohio by opening a slightly smudged and suspect envelope.  I wish you both healing – and broth. And my very best to your mother as she recuperates too. My former Marine chuckled grimly when I read to him your description of us living rurally within the benevolent outer rings of D.C. How right you are – how beautifully you put it, and how sad for the country that the wealthiest counties in the U.S. cluster around the warm teat that is Washington D.C. A bonus of living within that benevolent outer ring – the National Cherry Blossom Festival in a few short weeks. This year... Read More

Choices in Virtual Garden Tours

Choices in Virtual Garden Tours
With so many people eager to see gardens without leaving your back porch and laptop, House Beautiful released a list of recommended virtual garden tours, which has been shared widely. My favorites of the five: Above, Claude Monet’s Giverny. I watched the one about Kew Gardens (above) was surprised by the size and variety of gardens there, including a space-age-looking alpine house. Buffalo Botanical Gardens Next I noticed Yahoo’s “Plans Canceled? Take a Virtual Stroll Through Some of the Nation’s Best Botanical Gardens” and it turns out they’re not videos some virtual technology I don’t recognize – like this in Buffalo or the one for the U.S. Botanic Garden. Call me a yahoo but I don’t GET how to use them. So what else is out there for sheer viewing pleasure and to inspire our own gardening? It’s spring, time to dream, and our garden … Read More
