Fortunately, I was able to make a stop in Coeur d’Alene, in the northern Idaho panhandle. Suffice to say, I discovered that there is much more to Idaho than growing Ireland’s favorite food to fight hunger.
I came to Idaho through the day job. When the opportunity arose to travel there, I jumped at it, like a college drunk on a Taco Bell platter. There is something appealing about traveling to a country that I know literally nothing about. Heck, I had to rely on Google Maps to deliver the sad news that Boise was nearly seven hours away from Coeur d’Alene. But surprisingly, perhaps not to the locals or to those smarter than me, the little lake town turned out to be enchanting and incredibly beautiful.
Way. Why did I go to a Norman Bates type motel in a small town in a state I knew nothing about? In addition to a handful of excellent reviews, I found this chimney stack embedded in the shape of Idaho using street view on Google Maps.
Abandoned Sherman Motels To Be Demolished
The owner of the motel was certainly a friendly man. His name escapes me, but his smile is memorable, as is his friendly way of explaining the area to a stranger. But don’t bring your booze here! Alcohol is not allowed on site. It wasn’t a big deal after all. Go ahead and piss yourself off and drag your confused self back to bed. It’s a safe enough area to lose your inhibitions without fear of criminals or getting kicked.
Arriving in the evening, I was left without much of an impression of little ole Coeur d’Alene before going to bed. The air smelled of pine, something I very much expected to find for the first time in the Pacific Northwest. If there was no fire in the air, there would be hell to pay! Luckily I had scheduled my flight the next day late enough to be sure I could see
The next morning I woke up to the sun rising in a crystal blue sky. Beautiful. But surprisingly it was 40-some degrees outside. Not what I would expect in the middle of a Canadian summer, much less in one of our 48 continental states. It didn’t matter though. I was in Idaho. Idaho’s Northern Pants. A place just a month ago I would never have imagined traveling to without burning through a lot of cash on a big, nowhere expedition. Because truth be told, there isn’t much up there in the way of big cities. Personally, I’m fine with that, but it’s not a cheap trip across a couple of time zones. But after thinking about the luck, I had been awake for a full 10 minutes and hadn’t started eating my breakfast. I am asking for food!
Down the street was the aptly named restaurant Jimmy’s Down The Street for a hearty, delicious breakfast. Jimmy’s is clearly a local establishment that lives up to the positive stereotype that fine dining comes from small towns. These are the people politicians use when they argue for “Real America”. But what these idiots don’t realize is that these people would never want to engage in such a stupid argument. They are very nice!

With my stomach happy and full, I made it my mission to find out where the center of Coeur d’Alene was,
Such a place already existed. Do not misunderstand me. I felt pretty good. But so far, Coeur d’Alene has felt more like a small country town without going downtown. Not sure where to look, I decided to start my search near Lake Coeur d’Alene, because even though there was no downtown, you can’t go wrong with a lake—unless it’s Michigan. I’m from Ohio, after all, and we maintain our sibling rivalry with that state, even with its named bodies of water.
And there it was: Lake Coeur d’Alene surrounded by pine trees, a park and large, historic homes. I will cliché and use the adjective “breathtaking”. If you enjoy an escape from the summer heat, this is the place for you. Even Cleveland was 10-20 degrees warmer at the time. Needless to say, I welcomed the chance to experience a cool breeze and enjoy the piney air. If I had more time, I’d take a bike ride along the nearby North Idaho Centennial Trail, a 24-mile trail that runs from the northeast corner of Lake Coeur d’Alene to the Spokane River near the Idaho-Washington border. Although my mind can change more than TV channels when the remote control is in the hands of a 5-year-old, Coeur d’Alene was quickly making its way onto my list of favorite vacations. You know when I’m a multi-millionaire and can afford to work remotely in a city whose largest nearby airport is in Spokane, WA.
I spent 30-60 minutes walking along the beach admiring the view and the melodious sounds of the incoming tide. I even found a bunch of rocks that for some reason caught my eye, so much so that I decided to steal one for the rock collection I don’t have. Something about this piece of igneous (I don’t really know if it was igneous) asked me to bring it. Well, I apologize to any eco-warriors I may have offended. Let’s hope the earth’s ecosystem doesn’t suddenly collapse due to my rock theft like the hijinks that ensue in a time travel episode where one of the characters touches something in the past and completely changes the future so the dinosaurs or her popularity Cher still exists.

Before walking back to the car, I noticed something in the distance. Was it… a resort? No offense to my newfound Idaho friends, but I don’t think anyone in the world thinks Idaho has a resort town, much less in the region. Something about the handles always screamed “stay away” in my opinion. Florida has the MTV cluster in Panama City, Texas has a steady stream of slaughterhouses, but Idaho quickly became the exception to the rule. Now I see a terrible way out!
Perhaps unsurprisingly for residents of states closer to Ohio, Coeur D’Alene is naturally a fun water vacation. A decent size dock space for several boats and wave boats for customers, probably regulars, to sail around Lake Coeur D’Alene. But that’s hardly the best part. As I got closer, something else began to appear in the distance. Was it the walkable downtown I was looking for? It certainly was.
Just off the Centennial Trail is downtown Coeur d’Alene along Sherman Ave., on the same street as my motel. What I was looking for was only seven blocks away all the time. (There’s a metaphor in here somewhere). Fortunately, I had found this gem with enough time to take a quick walk and take a few photos. It was love at first sight
